Why Do People Watch Porn?
- by timelesscity
Given the accessibility, anonymity, and availability of porn on the internet, watching pornography (porn) has grown in popularity and is happening at younger and younger ages. Pornography viewing is popular and acceptable, despite the fact that some people may worry about how often they watch it.

Fewer studies have looked at why people choose to view pornography, despite the fact that many have examined and discussed the possible repercussions of doing so.
One research used an open-ended questionnaire with the single question, “Why do you watch pornography?” to explore the primary motivations behind people’s decisions to watch porn.
The 276 undergraduate participants in this study were advised not to hypothesize as to why other people would view porn, but rather to consider their own personal motivations. They were then asked to enumerate the top three reasons they watched porn. There are four main themes that emerge from the results.
Sexual desire:
Many of the interviewees admitted that their sex drive or interest in sex is the reason they watch porn. This category included watching porn “for the pleasure of watching videos that include my kinks and fetishes,” “for physical pleasure,” “to have visual content during masturbation,” and “because I like them.” Because it’s easier to use porn than to locate a spouse, the researchers thought that watching porn may be a reflection of a “short-term mating orientation” that could lead to high sex drive. Because short-term mating may enhance the likelihood that one’s genes will be passed on to the next generation, short-term mating orientation may be favorable to evolution. Consequently, it seems sense that people could naturally lean toward this way of thinking yet turn to porn instead of having casual sex when they are unable or unable to do so.
Improving erotic efficacy:
One common motivation for watching porn is to improve one’s erotic abilities. One person claimed that they watch porn “for understanding the sexual pleasures of people of the opposite sex,” “to gain experience,” “to learn some techniques to apply in real life,” and “to learn new sex positions.” Once more, this line of thinking may be linked to an evolutionary characteristic: raising one’s fitness. It is theoretically possible to improve one’s sexual performance and hence one’s chances of attracting a partner and procreating.
For instrumental and social reasons:
It seems that social influences have an impact on people’s decision to view porn. A number of individuals disclosed that they watch porn “because it’s what all my friends are watching” or “because it’s in a show I watch.”
Lack of social and relationship skills: Lastly, a large number of those surveyed claimed that watching porn helped them deal with loneliness or lessen unpleasant emotions. They said that they watch porn “because it makes them feel lonely,” “because they don’t have a romantic relationship,” “because they need love,” “to decompress,” and “to chase bad thoughts away.” These justifications for watching porn suggest that people utilize it as a coping method for uncomfortable feelings like loneliness and melancholy.
The lesson learned
The following is an overview of the research findings on gender disparities, frequency of pornography watching, reasons for using porn, and problematic pornography.
Reasons for
The three main reasons people watch porn: fantasy, sexual curiosity, and sexual pleasure.
Regularity of seeing pornography
The frequency of porn use was inversely correlated with stress relief and boredom avoidance, but correlated somewhat with sexual satisfaction. There was no correlation found between the frequency of pornography watching and sexual interest, fantasy, lack of sexual fulfillment, emotional distraction or repression, or self-exploration.
problematic use of pornography
While stress reduction found a moderate link with problematic porn consumption, sexual pleasure, imagination, avoidance of boredom, and emotional distraction or suppression had weak associations. Self-examination, sexual curiosity, and unfulfilled sexual desires have little to do with problematic porn consumption.
Men and Women in Comparison
Men scored higher than women in the areas of using porn for sex, stress relief, emotional diversion or suppression, avoiding boredom, imagination, and unfulfilled sexual desires. There were no gender differences in the motivations for sexual curiosity and self-exploration.
